This information may help you understand a little more about the production processes and how you can be confident you are buying a quality sheepskin product or lambs wool product.
Choosing between woollen and sheepskin productsWool comes from the shearing process. When they shear the sheep the fleece is called ‘tops’. The 'tops' are treated with hercoset and knitted onto a cotton backing.
Sheepskin, on the other hand, is the whole skin. After the animal has been killed the skin is tanned and dyed.
Sheepskin products last longer because the natural hide is tougher than the cotton backing wool is sewn on to. This is why sheepskin is used for longer wearing situations such as car seat covers and floor rugs.
Lambswool, on the other hand, is used best where softness and comfort is paramount. Underblankets are wool sewn onto a cotton backing for this reason.
Selecting quality woollen and sheepskin productsWith woollen products quality starts at the beginning. We select our materials from the finest quality raw materials. Most often our product will come from the natural, clean environment of the Australian farmland.
Cross bred sheep have curls in the fleece. Mercedes Sheepskin Products
choose not to use that as it’s appearance is poorer. With merino sheep the micron count is finer. For you, our customer, this means softer, more comfortable wool.
With lambswool specifically, we have merino tops knitted onto a cotton backing via the sliver knitting process and treated with hercoset. Using hercoset treated wool allows the wool to be machine washable.
